Dear 2020, ...

For all of us, 2020 is coming to an end. I guess, like most of us, I have mixed feelings about the year that has passed. Please notice I said “mixed” feelings. Because not everything has been bad. And while I know we tend to focus on the negative aspects of all the happenings of this year, I wanted to pick something positive that occurred in every single month of this unusual year. So come along with me, on a trip to the (not so bad) past.

Top 10 - The Travel Destinations That I’ll Never Forget

Let’s be real: 2020 is the year to dream of travel, not to travel (besides domestically or close by). Long international trips seem very far away and a little (or bigger) travel blues might be on the way. Still, we shouldn’t let ourselves be kept from dreaming of travelling, planning future trips and thinking back about great places we’ve visited so far. And that’s exactly what I am going to do today: tell you all about my all-time favourite travel destinations so far. Some might be ‘mainstream’ or obvious; others are more special. So let’s dive right into dreaming away.

Solo Travel: Freedom & Fun? Or Boredom & Nightmares?

I am writing this blog post while sitting on the plane on my way back home from Berlin. There was another blog post planned for today, but in Berlin, I changed my mind. I took my trip alone, just like I did in Australia or Los Angeles and I realized, travelling solo can be so much fun, but it can also be hard.

Zero Waste Shops Innsbruck

Recently, we’ve been writing a lot about plastic and waste in general and we know some of you might ask the question: “But where do I get food that’s not wrapped in 20 layers of plastic?” Well, you’re probably surprised that even a rather small city like Innsbruck already has some Zero Waste Shops. Also, we know that some you might not be familiar with how these kinds of shops work, so we’ll tell you a bit more about that as well.

Dedicate – 30 Days of Yoga

I think it was about three years ago that I tried yoga for the first time. For me, it was love at first sight. At first, I didn’t know how to start, but then I found Adriene Mishler’s YouTube channel “Yoga with Adriene” and she showed my exactly what to do. With yoga, I had the freedom to whatever I wanted to do on that mat; I could fit a workout in when I wanted to, I could focus on flexibility, I could just meditate and move my body in a way that feels good. But then I fell out of the habit. I stopped doing yoga on a daily basis. At first, it became every other day; then weekly; then, maybe, if even, once a month, until I stopped completely.

Zero Waste Challenge

Not too long ago, we posted a blogpost about unnecessary waste where we also announced that we would do a one-week zero waste challenge this January. We even had a friend join us and together, we tried to produce as little waste as possible. In today’s post we will tell you all about our experience with this challenge, what we learned, what took us by surprise, and what we will take with us and continue in the future.

What's in our bags?

A few days ago, we gave you a little introduction to a topic that has become of big importance to us personally: (plastic) waste. It’s been great getting so much feedback from you; may it be by asking questions or mentioning points we haven’t talked about yet. We definitely plan on giving this topic regular attention and even made a one-week challenge to find out if we are capable of going completely zero waste, but you’ll hear more about that in a few days.

Zero Waste? Zero unnecessary waste!

Let’s start by telling you a little story. A few months ago, Natascha was on vacation in Italy. The beach was clean, the water too and everything seemed fine. She was enjoying her time on the beach with a friend a until she saw a woman with 2 kids. Or, to be honest it was not even the woman who she noticed first. It was the plastic wrapper of the woman’s croissant. It landed right on Natascha’s lap. The wind carried it over to her, but the woman didn't care at all. Natascha saw about 3 wrappers making their way across the beach. What made her angry the most - she was lying right next to a bin. When getting up she would have been there within less than a step. But it was the wind who was taking her trash away. What a role model for the kids ... So Natascha went over there and told her off.

It's 2019!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

We can’t believe it’s already 2019! Time surely does fly!

Since the idea of Alps and Abroad has been born last summer, and the blog finally having gone live in October, we have come quite a long way; even though it technically hasn’t been that long. Nevertheless, we thought that the start of the new year should be a possibility to look back, even for us. For both of us it has been an incredible journey and we can’t believe how far we’ve come – and all this in just 2 months! The blog has been a motivation and chance for us the explore and create things and we both want to share how much and in what ways this has changed us and made us grateful.

Blog Launch Brunch

A few days before officially launching our blog, we decided to have brunch together with friends to discuss the final details. We planned on going to a lovely breakfast spot very close to Innsbruck but had to change plans as they were closed for holidays. Even though we love going out for breakfast or brunch, sometimes it's a nice idea to stay at home and prepare the food yourself, so we opted for that instead. Also, it's a lot better for the budget to sometimes stay at home.

Art and Design Market - Innsbruck

The Art and Design market takes place aprox. Twice a year in Innsbruck, but we have never been there before. This time it visited Innsbruck on the first weekend of November (3.-4. November 2018) and we went there on Saturday. The location, the VAZ Hafen, is located on the outskirts of Innsbruck, but is easily reached by bus or even by foot, like we did.

We definitely recommend going there early, as it gets really packed around lunchtime and the afternoon. If you are looking for a place to save money and buy cheap goods, you are definitely in the wrong place, but if you are looking for cool handcrafted and sustainable stuff, this is definitely the place to be. Also it is great to get in touch with the sellers, which most of the time are also the producers of the goods you are looking at.

Road Trip through the USA: 1 Year from Now

The same day the idea for Alps and Abroad was born, we also came up and started planning our biggest trip so far. We're not sure what came up first - you could say one thing lead to the other. We were just talking about different kinds of trips we want to go on in the future and all of the things we want to see and discover. Very quickly, all sorts of ideas started to come together into one: Why not fly to America and go on a big road trip through the North-West of the USA? Why not take about 4 to 5 weeks off next summer and visit most of the national parks and big cities on the west coast? We know that trips like this one require a lot of precise planning and preparations, so we started right away. We also want to bring you along with us and show you how to bring a project like this to life and what to do and what not to do when planning a trip like this.

We have been working on this project for such a long time now and we are so stocked to finally be able to tell the world about it and show everyone what we have been up to.
