Winter Sports in the Alps: Schlick 2000, Tyrol, Austria

Welcome back to the blog and to a new blog post. Once more, I’m focusing on a ski resort that is pretty close to Innsbruck, Austria. This time, we’re headed slightly south, to the Stubai valley, where a skiing area that is very popular among tourists and locals is located: the Schlick 2000 in Fulmpes.

As said, for this ski resort, you have to head south from Innsbruck. Just before the toll station Schönberg, you have to exit and enter the Stubai valley. From the toll station, it is not very far to the ski resort, as it is located in Fulpmes, one of the first villages in the valley. From Innsbruck, it takes you around 20-30 minutes to get there, so way less, compared to the Stubai Glacier, which is located at the end of the valley, at more than 1-hour distance. You can also take a bus from the city centre of Innsbruck to get there or use the tram until Fulpmes, and then change to the ski bus for the last few metres until the valley station of the Kreuzjochbahn gondola.

The Schlick 2000 is one of the medium-sized ski resorts, and one of the biggest ones around Innsbruck. What I particularly like - besides the scenery, are the slopes. They vary in difficulty levels, and also in length. You can find insanely long slopes, which I as a snowboarder love. There’s also a slope that leads directly down to the valley, and this one is even longer than the others (obviously!). Due to the high amount of people and warm temperatures on the day of my visit, I only went until the middle station of the main gondola, and even this took me a few minutes. If you are an adventurous type of skier or snowboarder, you can try out some jumps at the fun park or one of the speed runs. For the little skiers, there’s also a ski school and an area where they can start on trying out winter sports.

Of course, hitting the slopes is exhausting, and after a while, it’s time for a lunch break, or to simply relax in the sun. So, let’s talk a bit about the different huts in the Schlick. The main restaurant of the are is the Panoramarestaurant Kreuzjoch, at the peak station of the Kreuzjochbahn. This is a self-service restaurant. But you can find various different huts in the skiing area. During my visit, we decided to head to the Sennjochhütte for lunch, which is located just next to the peak stations of the Panoramabahn and the Zirmachbahn lifts. Sadly, the sun came out only after lunch, so we were not able to eat outside while tanning a bit, but in the afternoon, lots of people just sat there and relaxed. No matter what food you are a fan of, you’ll surely find a hut or restaurant that suits you, and despite it being a busy day, we didn’t have to wait long for a table, which always comes in handy if you’re hungry.

I have mentioned the Schlick 2000 before, when I was talking about the project ‘Brückenschlag’, a plan to unite the ski resorts Axamer Lizum, Schlick 2000 and Muttereralm. As you might remember, the reason it was not realized, was the ‘Kalkkögel’, a stunning mountain range that is protected and the fact that there was no possibility to realize a lift pillar in the protected area. If you struggle to understand how close the ski resorts are to each other, this might be easier by understanding, that this mountain range is exactly the same one you can see from the Axamer Lizum. There is nothing in between the skiing areas besides the Kalkkögel. What I find particularly beautiful about the Kalkkögel, is that they are quite rocky, but at the same time, the snow sticks pretty well, and they are beautifully shaped and covered in snow. They make for an amazing scenery.

There are various winter activities you can enjoy at the Schlick 2000. Not only skiing. For example, every week on Wednesday, you can go night-tobogganing, and there are lots of paragliders enjoying the area. Also, there are events on special occasions, such as Easter or Carnival.
